Highlights:
1991 James B. Recchie Design Award
- 244,000 square feet; 400-car parking garage addition to a 33,000 square foot historic 1902 Carnegie Library
- Involved the expansion, advanced voice, video and data communications, complete ADA and HVAC upgrades, below grade parking for 400 cars, historic renovation of the original Carnegie Library, and the maintenance of urban green space on a tight, 3.4-acre campus
- Phasing challenge involved demolition of structures currently on the site following the completion of the first phase of new construction. Library closed to the public for only a total of 15 days during the entire 3-year construction period
- A central atrium organizes the entire facility providing easy access from the first floor to the second and third floors
- Service docks on the lower level respect the historic neighborhood
